On the stand at the 1936 Motor Show was a four seat, two door car built on a long wheel base (9 foot 8 inch) chassis with the body by E Bertelli Ltd. The car was comparatively expensive and its performance as slow as its sales.

Having made the decision to reduce the number of 2 litre saloons from 100 to just 50 cars and the long wheel base car sales so slow, Aston Martin had to introduce a revised model to take up the production capacity. So a short chassis (8 foot 6 inch) car was introduced with a standard, wet sump engine with the design intent to be more sporty than the existing models, but not an out and out sports car.

This coincided with the resignation of A C Bertelli as a Director of the company and this meant a break in the link with the coachworks side of his family and an opportunity to introduce new coachbuilders to Aston Martin.

Abbey Coachworks of Willesden in London produced a sporty body for the car which made its first appearance to the first Earls Court Motor Show in 1937. The contemporary list price of the car was ?575 complete and a total of fifty cars were produced.

In style, it was, and remains, the image of a 1930's sports car and with 98 hp from the 2 litre, 4 cylinder engine, it delivered a sporty top speed of 85 mph.
