Model history The ultimate 2002 (or New Class) was the 2002 Turbo. It was introduced at the Frankfurt Show in 1973 and was to be produced in strictly limited numbers. Infact only 1,672 would be produced world wide with only a handfull finding their way to the UK as official imports. With the KKK Turbo Charger fitted the engine produced 170 BHP which made the 2002 Turbo a seriously quick sports saloon. The turbo was mounted low on the right hand side of the engine with the air being fed to it via a tube from the righthand side of the front valance. The other two vents in the valance were used to cool the radiator and oil cooler. Over and above the mechanical specification of the 2002ti the Turbo had a heavy duty clutch, upgraded steering, limited slip differential, upgraded suspension and 10" vented rotors to help cool the front brakes. The two main options were a 5 speed Gatrag close ratio gearbox and 6" wide 'turbo style' alloy wheels. They were produced in only 2 colour schemes Chamonix White or Polaris Silver both sporting the tri-colour BMW M Stripes on the flanks and front spoiler. There was also a boot spoiler and inside the instrument cluster contained a boost gague. You can find out more at the 02 Registers website www.bmw2002.co.uk
