Model history Developed by BMW Motorsport the E28 M5 is powered by a modified version of the M88 twin-cam 24-valve inline six first introduced in the mighty M1 of the late 1970's. The bodies for the M5 were pressed at BMW's main factory at Dingolfing and then sent to the Motorsport facility in Garching, Munich where most of them were hand built for the European and American markets. Just under a hundred were sent as knock-down-kits to South Africa where they were assembled for that market. The M5 utilises most of the standard cars suspension set up but has up-rated shocks which are either Bilsteins or Boge items and larger diameter front and rear anti-roll bars. To help with slowing the car down the M5 also has better brakes with larger diameter discs and 4 pot calipers at the front, and of course ABS was standard equipment. There is little to identify the European Spec M5 from the outside, there was a black plastic front air dam which helped with front end lift at high speeds and a pair of M5 badges at the front and rear. Other cosmetic changes were largely unseen such as the aerodynamic under tray that lined the engine compartment.
