Bugatti factory records denote chassis 38221 as being invoiced by to their Paris showrooms on the 21st August 1926 and it was then fitted with the extremely attractive open tourer coachwork by Lavocat & Marsaud that it retains today. It is not yet known when 38221 found its way to the USA but by 1974 it was sold by New York dealer to well known American collector Mayer Pollock, by which time it was Ford V8 powered but otherwise complete yet in need of complete restoration. Coincidentally Pollock already owned a T38A (chassis 38463) which was in far worse condition therefore he decided to commission Foulkes Halbard to rebuild the engine from this car (number 371), which was no longer supercharged, and install it into 38221 so to return it to its correct configuration. Pollock retained the car until 1987 when it was sold and entered the prized collection of West coast collector Arturo Keller who kept the car until 1993 when it was bought by London dealer Danny Margulies. A year later it was sold at auction and purchased by prominent East coast collector Oscar Davis who promptly returned the car to the USA. Enjoyed within Mr Davis? collection for several years, he offered it for sale with Christie?s at their Tarrytown sale in 2001 and since then it was treated to a comprehensive mechanical rebuild by marque specialist Competition Motors.Imported into the UK in 2008 by the current owner, it has been regularly exercised and use has even included a tour to France in 2009.
