An outstanding right-hand drive Buick imported recently from South Africa. In mid blue and in good condition with matching interior. Compare this with anything available in Britain before the war. Supplied to the new owner with a new MoT, newly serviced and ready to use.
Few people know that David Dunbar Buick was a Scotsman. Born in Arbroath in 1854, he emigrated with his parents to the US when he was two years old. Lack of knowledge of this fact is largely down to the continued survival of his name in the Buick Motor Company, part of that great American institution of General Motors, but also because his association with the company ended early and he died penniless. Yet he clearly had the Scottish aptitude for engineering and would have been proud of the legacy of cars bearing his surname.
This is a 1939 Buick Special sedan (saloon) with four doors, the rear two of which are "suicide" doors. ('Special' was the Buick model name.) Built just before the start of the Second World War, it was in advance of most of the cars being mass-produced in the US, let alone the UK. Bought largely by a middle-class market, Buicks were a cut above Ford, Chevrolet and Oldsmobile, but not as ostentatious as a Cadillac. With a straight-eight engine of 248 cu inches (over four litres), the car has a fair turn of speed and hydraulic brakes to stop it. Although it only has three forward speeds (column change), it flows along on its torque.
