This De Dion Bouton has been in the back of an of an East Lothian Garage for the last 10 years and in the same Scottish family for the best part of 70 years before that. Although this make was one of the most respected pioneering manufacturers of the early years, it hardly recovered after the First World War and car production of its Edwardian-style saloons had dwindled to a virtual standstill by the end of the 20’s. This rare car is one of the last and a piece of motoring history.
The car is an extremely original Type LA with an in-line four cylinder engine made in 1927 but not registered with the authorities in Scotland until 1936. It has hardly been used and has only 29k miles on the clock. Although somewhat dusty, its original fabric body, brass fittings and wooden-spoked wheels are as were on the day it left the works.
The interior is like an Edwardian sitting room in colour and style with exquisite marquetry inlaid wooden panelling and cord door pulls. The engine ticks over but it is somewhat difficult to drive and potholes should be avoided as they are not kind to wooden wheels. It has the original Buff Log Book but has never had an MoT having not been on public roads since they started in 1960. The valuable number plate is original.
The car is really a museum piece, but could be taken to shows where it would win the originality prize every time. It is also a unique investment. It is difficult to value, but offers will be considered by the owner and transport can be arranged.
