to the standard 600 of 1955,
the clever design of the 600D,
enabled it to carry four adults,
in a remarkable small unit.
A mere 10? 8? in length, it had
a water cooled, rear mounted
four cylinder, in-line 767 cc engine,
producing a creditable 29 bhp and
a maximum speed of 68 mph,
returning some 48 mpg.
Some noticeable changes to
the standard 600, were the
improved oil filtration and
cooling systems, side window
vents and key ignition.
In late 1964 the rear hinged door
option was discontinued and
replaced by the more conventional
and 'modern' front-hinged doors:
one of the less popular improvements!
Fiat?s 600/600D range proved
a huge success and by the end of
its 15 year run, in 1970,
some 2.6 million had been built.
The production of the car, however,
continued in other countries
for years to come.
This excellently maintained RHD
early 600D is one of the last
'rear hinge models'.
From a detailed inspection it appears
to have been well looked after
with no sign of rot or rust,
the floor pans are are in excellent
rust free original condition.
The speedometer indicates 55,000 miles
which we believe to be genuine, though
sadly much of its history has been lost.
The car has had little use over
recent years and has subsequently
undergone a full service,
covering overhauls of brakes,
steering and suspension.
It now drives extremely well;
the engine runs smoothly and feels
tight. All in all, a spirited little car,
which more than justifies the affection
of those who can remember it,
in its heyday.
An original set of correct period
white steel wheels has been fitted
to the car, during a full strip
down in mid 2010.
At this time the car was
the subject of a full re-paint,
in its original colour and
looks superb.
A recent trip to the ?All Italian Day?
at Brooklands went without a hitch,
and attracted more interest than
the latest Ferraris!
This 600D has a current MOT,
to February 2011 and of course is
Road Tax exempt.
