NW 606 was originally applied to the Trubie Moore ‘Akela’ but when Trubie stopped competing the car in 1925 the engine (this engine) was acquired by Jack Moore and used in Wasp. Continued development led to the specification it retains today when the engine was transplanted into Moore’s 2 seater racer, as such the Frazer-Nash club agreed that this number bore most relevance to the car we offer today.
At the heart of NW 606 is its unique and formidable, bronze crankcase and cylinder heads: a true thumper thanks to its 90 degree V-Twin configuration with chain driven overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder but what really sets it aside is its 1,493 cubic capacity! Given that it is after all a cycle car of most nimble proportions – performance is assured!
It is known that the engine suffered a blow-up in the 1930s when it was dismantled by Jack Moore, then resigned to ‘project’ status it passed from Moore to Bill Craddock before the war and upon his passing it was acquired by Tom McEwen. An evening in the pub led to the current owner taking on the project and after 6 years it is a going concern. The engine itself required a huge amount of work namely the repair to the crankcase, design and manufacture of a new crankshaft, sourcing of suitable rods and a detailed account of the build is available to interested parties.
Building the surrounding car was an equally major project but aside from the chassis rails and body all other parts required are of original GN manufacture. Whilst the owner was able to form the chassis rails and craft the woodwork the body was entrusted to Vintagecars.com.
