Only a handful of this rare model are known to exist and this is believed to be the only B-316 Roadster in Europe. Acquired by the previous owner in the USA in 2001 as an entirely original and very sound, rust-free example, it then underwent a total 'no expense spared' restoration at a reputed cost of ?100,000, the work being done by a well known and prestigeous French restorer. The powerful 3700cc straight six motor, was fully rebuilt and balanced and the gearbox has been fitted with a Laycock overdrive which allows fast cruising capability of around 90 kph. Another sensible update to enhance its use in modern traffic conditions is an electric cooling fan to boost the original belt driven type. The brakes have also been upgraded.
Delightful original features include the 'Dickey Seat', opening front screen, side wind deflectors, rear box trunk with leather straps and twin side mounted spare wheels.
The mohair hood and frame are easy to put up and lower and the car is equipped with a mohair hood tonneau cover.
Inside, the burgundy leather seats and carpets are immaculate. Since its restoration, the car has seemingly never been driven in the rain and consequently the underside is as spotless as the exterior.
Hupmobiles were never produced in great numbers but with designs created by the great Raymond Loewy from the early 1930's, they were always considered interesting and unusual cars with rock solid mechanicals.
This rare Hupmobile has all the attributes to qualify as an exceptional collectors car investment and one that can be used and enjoyed with confidence. Powerful six cylinder engine and overdrive gearbox means it can easily keep up with modern traffic and indeed was used by its last owner for a 1500 mile classic car tour in France in 2007.
Registered in both UK and France, it has a current Mot and tax.
