Model history The small and light MR2 was something no one had expected from Toyota, a manufacturer known for their economical and practical family cars. The folded angular lines evoked origami paper sculpture but the most important features of the MR2 was its light kerb weight - just 998 kg, superior handling and, high reving small-displacement engine. Some car historians contend that the MR2 was Lotus-designed which is a reference to the Lotus M90 project, but this was scrapped after a single prototype was built. At the time, Toyota, along with the Chapman family was a major share holder in Lotus, and Lotus Engineering, a prolific consultancy company was heavily involved in the designing the 4AG series Toyota engines which were first used in MR2s, however, the MR2's suspension and handling were designed by Toyota with the help of Lotus engineer Roger Becker. Toyota chose to use the naturally aspirated 4A-GE 1587cc engine with double overhead camshafts, which allowed the use of 16 valves for a better gas flow through the combustion chamber. The engine was also equipped with DENSO electronic multi-point fuel injection and a variable intake geometry, giving the engine a maximum power output of 124 BHP. These fantastic pocket rockets were built from 1984 to 1989 and we had to wait for the Lotus Elise before we got a car that was as pure to drive and these fantastic little sports cars.
