Buying second hand cars can be stressful if you are not sure what to check for. Classic cars for sale in particular have to be checked over thoroughly so you know what you are getting for your money. You should never view a car in the dark or in the rain as this can hide a multitude of sins. You will not spot scratches, dents or rust on classic cars for sale in the rain.

  • Take a walk around the whole of the car.
  • Always start the car with a cold engine because this is the best time to check for smoke coming from the exhaust.
  • Allow the seller of the classic cars to show you around and tell you about the car but don’t forget to carry out your own checks.
  • Crouch down in front of each wheel and check that the front and back wheels are in line with each other. If they are not the car might have been in a crash.
  • Check the gaps between panels are equal, if they are not then the car might have been in a crash or been refitted badly.
  • Look at all tyres including the spare for uneven wear. If they are unevenly worn then the suspension might be damaged. If the tyres need replacing then you can seriously bargain down on the price.
  • Keep your eyes open for rust especially around wheel arches.


Used Cars for Sale – Checking the Inside of Classic Cars

  • Check all seatbelts work.
  • Make sure that you check the mileage and interior of the car match up. A 50,000 mile car shouldn’t have worn and sagging seats.
  • Make sure mileage tallies with old MOT certificates and service history.
  • Make sure the seats in second hand cars all move correctly and all the switches work.
  • Locate the Vehicle Identification Number and check it hasn’t been tampered with.
  • Check all of the numbers in the logbook match the car documents.
