The Austin Mini, also known as the Classic Mini or simply the Mini is arguably one of the most iconic cars in the world and was produced in large numbers from 1959-2000, making it one of the longest produced cars in the world. The classic mini also featured heavily in the 1969 film, The Italian Job which only helped cement its status as a fashion icon and an icon of the 1960’s.

The Classic Mini

  • The Mini was produced in large numbers in various forms, the saloon version is by far the most common but the classic Mini was available as an estate car, a van, a pick-up truck, and as a square nosed clubman, not to mention the Mini Moke. Probably the most famous variant of the classic mini however was the Mini Cooper which offered improved performance and was very successful as a racing car and as a fashion icon.
  • The classic Mini comes with a variety of different engines depending on the age. The original Austin Mini came with an 848cc engine which was later upgraded to 997cc, a 998cc engine was the most common up until the early late 80’s but 1098c and the larger 1275cc engines were also common. The Mini Cooper originally used a tuned version of the 998cc engine but later featured tuned 1275cc engines. The final production runs of the classic Mini (1996-2000) featured fuel injected 1275cc engines. Every production classic mini had a variation of the A-series engine.
  • The classic Mini is famous for its efficient use of space and has influenced makers of modern small cars since its inception. The front wheel drive layout and transverse engine was a new concept in the 1950s and has been adopted ever since.
  • The classic Mini has always been popular with tuning companies and by enthusiasts. It is not hard to find a classic Mini for sale and prices can range from a few hundred pounds to upwards of £10,000 for originals or highly customised versions of the classic Mini for sale. Any genuine Mini Cooper or classic Mini for sale stands a good chance of fetching a good price.
  • Because of the popularity of the classic Mini, there are tens of thousands of different spare parts and performance parts available as well as dedicated enthusiast clubs and specialist classic Mini garages.
  • The classic Mini is known for rusting and those looking at a classic Mini for sale should pay extra close attention to the panels and the subframes of any classic Mini to make sure they are in good condition. Because of the popularity of the Mini Cooper, many other classic Mini models have been converted to look like the Mini Cooper so buyers of a classic Mini for sale should ensure they are buying a correct and authentic Mini Cooper.
