Classic Cars For Sale: The Austin Princess

The Austin Princess series of cars were based on the iconic Austin Sheerline, with the body of the car inspired by the Sheerline. The first Austin Princess arrived on the market in 1947, and was produced at the famous Longbridge factory.

In terms of classification, the Princess is considered a large saloon or limousine car. Public reaction to the car during its lifetime was fairly muted, although the Princess was a popular choice of transports for weddings and ceremonies.

The Austin Princess received several updates during its tenure on the car market, undergoing three versions – the Mark I, Mark II and Mark III. The cars are relatively rare on the classic cars market, with only 1,910 models produced.

In 1956, the Austin Princess received a more radical revamp – with the dropping of the ‘Austin’ name, the Mark IV was born. This saloon/limousine car had an enhanced, modern-style design, with integrated front wings. This model lasted until 1959, when British Leyland began to dominate the sector.

Interestingly, evidence remains courtesy of a 1953 magazine publication of the Austin Princess’ vital statistics. Research from the time shows the Princess could reach a top speed of 79mph and could reach 0-60mph in 23.3 seconds.
