5. Stereo/CD Player
With the exception of the late 90’s and early 2000’s Mini Cooper, the standard stereo in the Austin Mini was pretty poor (if it was there at all) and this can be an excellent way to spend money making the classic Mini a bit more modern. Head Units and speakers are not very expensive or difficult to fit in these classic cars.
4. Wide Arches and Wheels
This is a very popular styling choice and although not everybody’s cup of tea, wide arches and wheels do look good. Sportspack, Group 2 or Miglia arches coupled with 13”x7” wheels are the most common. This does however have an effect on the handling of the classic Mini if the suspension isn’t changed. The later (Sportspack) versions of the Mini Cooper often had these from the factory.
3. Hi-Lo Suspension
This is a very popular modification to the Austin Mini and dramatically improves the handling of an already very good handling car in the classic Mini. The kit consists of replacement suspension trumpets which are adjustable for ride height as well as improved (adjustable) shock absorbers.
2. Interior
The standard seats in the classic Mini are far from the best in terms of safety and long distance comfort. The competition Mini Cooper had improved seats but many people still choose to change the standard interior of the Austin Mini to either sporty bucket seats or comfortable seats from a modern car.
1. Stage 1 Kit
The stage one kit is by far the most common engine tuning kit and for roughly £150 is an excellent choice for all classic Mini owners. The kit consists of a full performance exhaust system, new inlet manifolds and air filter, improved carburettor needle and gaskets. Not only does this kit improve performance from the Austin Mini but also fuel economy (something which is a benefit from all classic cars).
Other popular classic modifications include more serious engine tuning, turbo charging, re-sprays and the fitment of roll cages/harnesses etc.
